What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained (2026)

Short answer ·

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the practice of making your brand, product or person the thing AI answer engines name and cite. Those engines include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot. Where SEO tries to rank a link, AEO tries to be the answer: named in the response, described correctly, and backed by a cited source.

  • Full name: answer engine optimization (British spelling: optimisation).
  • Goal: mentions, first-named position, citations and accurate descriptions in AI answers.
  • Relationship to SEO: it builds on SEO. Google calls it “still SEO” for its own AI features (Google Search Central).
  • Age of the term: in use since at least 2017–2018, when it meant featured snippets and voice answers (Search Engine Watch, 2018).

Not looking for marketing? “AEO” also stands for Authorised Economic Operator, an EU customs status for trusted traders (European Commission), and it is the stock ticker of American Eagle Outfitters. This page is about answer engine optimization.

How answer engines pick their sources

Most answer engines do not “know” the answer to a fresh question. They search first and write second. Google describes two techniques behind AI Overviews and AI Mode (source):

  • Retrieval-augmented generation (grounding). The model pulls relevant, current pages from the search index and writes its response from them, with links to the pages that support it.
  • Query fan-out. The model splits one prompt into several related searches. Google’s own example: “how to fix a lawn that’s full of weeds” fans out to queries such as “best herbicides for lawns” and “how to prevent weeds in lawn”.

The 2023 research paper that named generative engine optimization describes the same pipeline: a model reformulates the query, a search engine returns sources, and a response model writes an answer with inline citations (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). In their tests, adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics raised a source’s visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, while classic keyword stuffing did not help.

Microsoft’s rewritten Bing Webmaster Guidelines point the same way for Copilot: state facts directly, keep entity names clear and consistent, focus each URL on one topic and put essential information near the top (Search Engine Journal). In practice, a page gets picked when it does three things:

  • It is retrievable. Indexed, crawlable, and eligible for a snippet. For Google, that is the only technical requirement for AI features (source).
  • It answers a sub-query directly. The answer to one fan-out question sits in one clear passage, not spread across a page.
  • It agrees with other sources about a clearly identified entity. Same name, same facts, same description as your profiles and third-party mentions.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO (and LLMO, DEO)

The terms overlap heavily, and there is no consensus definition (Wikipedia). Google treats AEO and GEO as part of SEO; Bing uses “GEO” in its guidelines. The differences are mostly in goal and measurement:

TermFull nameGoalMain metricWho uses the term
SEOSearch engine optimizationRank links in search resultsPosition, clicks, impressionsEveryone; Google says AI search optimization is “still SEO” (Google)
AEOAnswer engine optimizationBe the answer: named and citedMention rate, first-named rate, citations, sentimentPractitioners since 2017–2018 (SEW)
GEOGenerative engine optimizationBe included in generative answersShare of voice and visibility in AI answersAcademic origin, 2023 (arXiv); Bing guidelines (SEJ)

DEODecision engine optimisationBe the option an AI recommends when users decideRecommendation rate in AI answers (no standard metric yet)Coined by James Dooley in a September 2026 press release

My working rule: SEO gets you retrieved, AEO gets you named. You need both, because an engine can only cite what it can find.

How DEO relates to AEO, with a live example: AEO vs DEO, explained with the King of AEO.

Who coined AEO, and how long has it been around?

The origin is claimed, not settled. Here is what the public record shows:

  • 2017 (claimed): Jason Barnard, founder of Kalicube, says he coined “answer engine optimization” in 2017, as Google began showing featured snippets and other direct answers (Kalicube).
  • 7 February 2018 (earliest independent write-up cited for it): Search Engine Watch, by Rebecca Sentance, covered a Trustpilot webinar with Chee Lo and Jason Barnard and wrote that the strategy “has come to be known as AEO, or answer engine optimization”. At the time, AEO was about voice search and featured snippets (Search Engine Watch).
  • November 2023: researchers from Princeton and IIT Delhi introduced the related term “generative engine optimization” (GEO), later presented at KDD 2024 (arXiv 2311.09735).
  • 2026: Google’s guide defines AEO and GEO as terms “you may see used” and files them under SEO (Google; SEJ coverage), and Bing adds GEO to its Webmaster Guidelines (SEJ).

Note the wording in the 2018 article: it credits Barnard with explaining the idea, but says the strategy “has come to be known” as AEO. It does not say he invented it. If you need a citation for the origin, “first documented in 2018, with Jason Barnard claiming the coinage in 2017” is the accurate version.

The newest offshoot of the term is a title: in 2026, practitioners began claiming „King of AEO“, and I was crowned King of AEO in Vienna on 14 September 2026.

A practical AEO checklist

This is the workflow I use. Every step is measurable, and none of them needs special files or hacks.

  1. Pick the prompts your buyers ask. List 20–50 real questions, from “what is X” to “best X for Y” and “X vs Z”. Take them from sales calls, support tickets, Search Console queries and People Also Ask.
  2. Measure a baseline across engines. Run every prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews/AI Mode, by market and language. Record whether you’re mentioned, whether you’re named first, which sources are cited, and how you’re described.
  3. Map the fan-out sub-queries. For each prompt, write down the sub-questions an engine is likely to search for (definitions, comparisons, prices, reviews, “near me”), and check who ranks for each one today.
  4. Answer each sub-query on the right page. Open with a direct 40–60-word answer, then give details, tables and dates. One page per intent, so your own pages don’t compete with each other.
  5. Cite your sources and add real numbers. Link the claims you make. In the GEO study, citations, quotations and statistics were the strongest levers (source).
  6. Make your entity consistent. Use the same name, bio and facts everywhere. Add Organization/Person schema with sameAs links, and keep your profiles (LinkedIn, directories, Wikidata where eligible) aligned.
  7. Keep it technically retrievable. Allow crawling in robots.txt and at your CDN or host, keep important content in text, and make sure structured data matches the visible text (Google).
  8. Earn independent mentions, then re-measure. Get covered in sources the engines already cite (trade media, reviews, community threads, listicles). Re-run the same prompt set weekly and change only what the data says to change.

What you can skip

For Google Search, Google says you can ignore llms.txt files, “chunking” content into tiny pieces, rewriting pages just for AI, and buying inauthentic mentions. Structured data is useful for rich results but is not required for AI features (source). Google also warns that spinning out a separate page for every fan-out variation, mainly to manipulate AI answers, can count as scaled content abuse.

How to measure AEO

Rankings alone don’t tell you whether you are the answer. Track a fixed prompt set on a schedule, ideally daily, with an AI visibility tracker or by hand, and record five numbers per engine and market:

  • Mention rate: the share of answers that name you at all.
  • First-named rate: how often you are the first brand or person named.
  • Citation rate: how often your own pages are cited as sources.
  • Cited domains: which third-party sites the engines lean on for your topic. That is your outreach list.
  • Sentiment and accuracy: whether the description of you is correct and positive.

Pair that with first-party data: the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console (Google) and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools (overview). Google also warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so treat tracker data as observed samples, not ground truth. The AEO Crown Tracker methodology shows how I run a fixed prompt set for one contested question.

AEO FAQ

What does AEO mean?

In marketing, AEO means answer engine optimization: getting your brand, product or person named and cited in AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews. Outside marketing, AEO also stands for Authorised Economic Operator, an EU customs status, and it is American Eagle Outfitters’ stock ticker.

What is AEO in AI?

In AI search, AEO is the work of making large language model answers mention and cite you. Because most answer engines search the web before they respond, AEO combines retrievable pages, direct answers to the sub-questions engines search for, a consistent entity, and independent mentions in sources those engines already cite.

What is AEO vs SEO?

SEO aims to rank a link in search results and is measured in positions and clicks. AEO aims to be named and cited inside the answer and is measured in mention rate, first-named rate and citations. AEO builds on SEO: an engine can only cite pages it can find, and Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.

Will AEO replace SEO?

No. Most answer engines retrieve pages from the web before they answer, and Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode: to be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. AEO builds on SEO. What it changes is the goal: being named in the answer, not only ranking near it.

Is AEO the new SEO?

It is better described as an extension of SEO than a replacement. Google files AEO and GEO under SEO, while Bing added GEO to its Webmaster Guidelines as its own named concept. The practical difference is the target: an AI answer instead of a list of links.

Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?

Evolving. In 2026 both Google and Bing published guidance for AI search, and both build it on existing SEO foundations: crawlable, indexed pages, helpful content and clear technical structure. What changes is the measurement, which now includes mentions and citations in AI answers alongside rankings and clicks.

How long has AEO been around?

Since at least 2017–2018. Jason Barnard says he coined the term in 2017, and Search Engine Watch documented it in February 2018, when AEO meant featured snippets and voice assistants. The meaning shifted to AI-generated answers after generative search products launched in 2023.

How do you measure AEO?

Run a fixed set of real buyer prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google AI Overviews on a schedule, and record mention rate, first-named rate, citation rate, cited domains and sentiment. Add first-party data from the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools.

Is AEO real?

Yes. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answer questions directly and name some brands but not others. You can measure which brands they name and which sources they cite, and you can change that with content and entity work. AEO is just the name for that practice. The hype around it, such as titles, crowns and memes, is a separate thing. Why such titles still become real in AI answers: the King of AEO as a simulacrum.

What is the difference between AEO and DEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is about being named and cited in AI answers. DEO (Decision Engine Optimisation), founded by James Dooley per his announcement of September 2026, is about being the option the AI recommends when the buyer makes the final choice. See Dooley Built DEO. I Took the AEO Crown.

How long does AEO take?

Retrieval-based answers, such as Perplexity and AI Overviews, can change within days. What a model knows without searching changes only with new training data, which takes months.
