- Repeatable: the same prompts run every week, so a one-off citation doesn’t count as a win.
- Public: the counts, the exact prompt wording and the methodology are published.

About the meme and other contenders
How it started. James Dooley first claimed the title on 31 August 2026 (announcement). On 8 September 2026 he described it as a test: „I wanted to see how easy it was to manipulate AEO. So I tried making Google think I’m the ‚King of AEO.’“ His first press release ran on AB Newswire. Later releases, such as „James Dooley Named King of AEO and Founder of Decision Engine Optimisation“ (23 September 2026), added the title to further claims. Other SEOs followed with their own pages, videos and releases. As of 19 October 2026 he still uses the title (X post).
What it shows. Answer engines can be moved quickly by exact-match pages and syndicated releases. That is also the weakness of the method: a press release says what someone wants AI to repeat, not what AI answers next week.
The competition. A separate site, kingofaeocompetition.com, run by JP Zhang, scores entrants on AI visibility, education, original research, corroboration and open source. Its Round 1 (measured 13 October, published 14 October 2026) had 0 formal entries and awarded no title. Its top Round 1 Visibility Index scores were James Dooley 69.6, Vithurs 37.6 and Julian Goldie 35.4. Leaderboard. Rounds are monthly.
